Sensory Play with the Domino & Juliette Bag of Chips
Have you dipped your hand into a D&J Bag of Chips yet? Don’t be fooled, these little discs aren’t just for counting and sorting, they are a full sensory experience. When we received the first production sample of the bag with bingo chips, I showed them to my Mother-in-Law and was pleasantly surprised when her face immediately lit up as she moved her hand around in the bag. I thought for sure I was going to need to explain why simple-colored discs were an important addition to our line. Instead, I literally couldn’t get her hand out of the bag, and after much raving about them—she suggested the name “Bag of Chips.”
Let’s chat a bit about getting the most out of your Bag of Chips! First off, as your children dig in, they are engaging in sensory play by feeling the smooth sides of the many different angles of the chips and hearing them clink when they drop. If you take the chips and dump them onto a light table, the colors will pop, igniting your child’s visual senses. Your child can explore how the colors deepen or change when you combine and stack chips that are the same and different colors. If you don’t have a light table, you can place them onto a flashlight and explore the different shades and patterns reflected on the wall. Of course the Bag of Chips also partners perfectly with the Colors Placemat. Sort through and gather similar chips to place on the color splashes or match the colors to the icons on the trim!
Let’s switch up the senses and make some noise with the Bag of Chips! Another way to play with the chips is through auditory sensory play. Shake up the Bag of Chips or pour them on a table or dish. If you really want to make some noise, encourage your little one to drop the chips onto a cookie sheet or make music by putting the chips into a cup, jar, or can with a lid.
Other fun ways to play with the Bag of Chips is to work those hands and feet by scooping them out of water and searching and digging for them in the sand! My little ones love pressing the chips into play dough (Bonus! Color sort with the dough as you go) or adding them to a sensory bin of rice or beans as a treasure hunt. But enough about my personal infatuation with these chips – I want to hear YOUR ideas! Snap a photo and share on social media, tagging @dominoandjuliette. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
